The company describes hardware, simulations and limits for snow and cold weather, with Alaska testing planned.

Winter creates difficult conditions for automated driving: snow can obscure lane markings, coat sensors and change traction from one block to the next. In a November 5 update, Waymo described how it prepares its autonomous driving system and vehicle fleet for cold weather.

The company says its sixth-generation hardware includes measures to keep cameras and other sensors clear, alongside winter tires and methods for detecting road traction. Waymo also describes simulation and supervised validation as parts of its preparation. It plans closed-course testing and data collection in Alaska; that is a planned activity, not proof of a public service operating there.

What happens when conditions are too severe?

Waymo says it may limit or pause service when weather conditions exceed its operating limits. That is a useful distinction from a claim that a self-driving car can operate in every kind of snowstorm. How a system recognizes a limit, communicates it and resumes service matters to the people who rely on it.

Our take: the most valuable autonomous-vehicle updates tell us not only what a system can do but when it will stop. Waymo’s descriptions are company claims; we have not independently tested its vehicles. The accompanying press image does not depict the winter test.
