On November 3, OpenAI described experiments in mechanical and electrical engineering, including a prototype device for interacting with Codex and a new research collaboration with Mazda.

From CAD to a physical prototype

OpenAI says two team members used its Astra model to help design an enclosure, printed circuit board and software integrations; a contract manufacturer built a small prototype batch. The company says manufacturing preparation required further review and iterations because the model did not consistently account for production limits, tolerances and assembly details.

Mazda's aerodynamics and crash-safety engineers are exploring model-assisted design and simulation, according to OpenAI. This is a research collaboration, not a claim that an AI-designed car is ready for sale. Reported results and benchmarks are OpenAI's, and we have not independently reproduced them.
